YWCA of Kauai will be joining forces with Kauai Community College to bring you One Billion Rising on February 14, 2014. This is the global movement to Rise, Release and DANCE for justice! It is estimated that 1 in 3 women on our planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. That is ONE BILLION women. That is ONE BILLION people calling for justice. That is ONE BILLION people rising to say enough is enough. That is ONE BILLION people using the healing power of movement to tell the world ONE BILLION women deserve better for themselves and their families. That is ONE BILLION RISING.
Kauai Event Information – Join us on Valentine’s Day.
As people around the world come together to dance in the spirit of justice and human rights, we will also be rising up right here on Kauai! On Friday afternoon, February 14, KCC will host our very own local One Billion Rising event. There will be performances by several local dance groups, including KCC’s own dance team and special guests who will share personal experiences and thoughts about why this movement is so important for women and men everywhere. The afternoon will end with an invitation for all attendees to join in for a performance of Break the Chain, choreographed by Debbie Allen specifically for One Billion Rising.
The One Billion Rising Movement.
Started by Eve Ensler, the author, playwright, and world-renown advocate for women’s rights. Riding on the momentum created by the Vagina Monologues and V-day, One Billion Rising is a chance for men, women and children to come together and use their creative expression to call for justice for women and girls everywhere.
A Different Valentine’s Day on Kauai.
February 14th is a date we all know well. Valentine’s Day is that special time of the year when we shower our significant others with love and adoration. Gifts, chocolates, cards, a night out or maybe just a small gesture to say “I love you,” Valentine’s is the perfect opportunity for us to dazzle our loved ones with a little extra romance.
Or not.
While some may relish the chance to participate in Cupid’s Holiday, others may be avoiding it like the plague. For the single folks out there, February 14th may induce uncontrollable eye-rolling and a deep sense of exasperation as even the hint of the V-word seems to rub salt into the open wound of our eternal single-hood.
Well, ok, maybe that’s just me. And maybe I’m being a little dramatic. But I think we can all agree that many of us have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this holiday. Depending on our partners (or lack thereof), this can be one of best or worst days of the year.
One Billion Rising is an alternative way to spend Valentine’s Day this year. Whether you’re looking for something different to spice up your Valentine’s Day or just hoping for something to do other than wallow in loneliness, we invite you to join us as we stomp our feet, clap our hands and shake our booties in the name of peace, freedom, justice and dignity for all people!
